Flute Facebook Groups You NEED To Join

If you know a thing or two about me, you know I’m all about community and building communities with fellow flutes. All too often, we flutists (and musicians in general) find ourselves in competition or having negative interactions with other musicians all due to our egos. It’s high time we stopped that. So, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite Facebook Groups you should definitely join if you’re a flutist. These are in no particular order, but I highly recommend joining all of them.

Etude of the Week (EOTW)

Etude of the Week mirrors lots of the things I talk about in terms of practicing etudes week-to-week. It’s such a great and supportive community full of amateurs and teachers. The idea is to play along with the group as they go through an etude a week, posting videos of yourself playing and getting feedback (and often kind words) from fellow flutists. I absolutely adore this group, and while I don’t post in it as often as I should (I’m currently working on a different set of etudes), I think it’s a great resource for all flutists.

Flute 360 Family

Flute 360 is awesome! It’s based on Heidi Kay Begay’s podcast (also titled Flute 360) and they discuss all things flute. On the podcast, Heidi interviews tons of incredible people so that you can learn as much as possible about the flute. The group is extremely inclusive and fun. Heidi is also such a supportive human. I absolutely believe she’s become a staple in the flute community.

Solo of the Month

There are two different versions of this group, one that refers to itself as “Amateur” and then one that’s a little more intense. I love the amateur group because it’s extremely forgiving and lighthearted. The more intense version has lots of opportunities and seminars to work on the pieces, but again, it is a bit more intense. Both are insanely fun and extremely supportive.

Woodwind Support Community

This one is really fun because it’s not just for flutes. It’s run by two people who have built the Virtual Woodwind Academy and are always around to answer questions. They often partner with other teachers in order to grow their expertise and add additional viewpoints. It’s a really fantastic community.

Flute Forum

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1686186458300555

Flute Forum really has become such a supportive community for flutists to ask just about anything - be it technical questions about the instrument itself or questions about repertoire and problem areas. I love how many positive people contribute to these discussions. Often, they get parents who don’t play but have kids that play and have questions posting in the group seeking advice. It’s a great community to be a part of.

Final Thoughts

Having a supportive community is so great, especially now that the internet connects us so deeply. That said, competitiveness, negativity, and bullying are highly discouraged in these groups, and here on my page, so be sure that you’re putting your best foot forward in a positive and supportive manner when interacting with your fellow flutists. There’s simply no need for negativity when we play such a cool and fun instrument!
